TAKE A PEEK

BOOK 1

 Take a peek . . . . . . . . . . . Book 1

Come!  Let’s go to children’s church and see what exciting things are happening there.

We know it is time for the fun to begin as we approach the room and hear joyful little voices singing God’s praises and shouting Hurray! Hurray!

Here in children’s church we learn which neighbor we should love and what really matters to God.  As we go from being wiggly caterpillars to beautiful butterflies, waving our colored scarves in the air, we experience the wondrous works of God.  We get a glimpse of heaven as we learn that heaven is a beautiful place.  Heading to the parking lot, we will spin our wheels or go in search of secret signs, experiencing once again that our God is an awesome God.

Here is an example of a Lesson from Book 1.

LESSON:  Promises, Promises

Item:  A very large rock (Pull it in a wagon down the aisle of the sanctuary or if the lesson is presented in the classroom, pull the wagon in the classroom after the children are sitting in circle.)

ScriptureMatthew 27:63-64  (LB)  “Sir, that liar once said, ‘After three days I will come back to life again.’  So we request an order from you sealing the tomb until the third day, to prevent his disciples from coming and stealing his body and then telling everyone he came back to life!  If that happens we’ll be worse off than we were at first.”

I brought this big rock with me this morning because I want us to talk about rocks.  Would any of you like to try and pick up this rock and hold it?  (Let the children try to lift the rock out of the wagon.)  What is the biggest rock you have ever seen?  (Let children respond.)

After Jesus died on the cross, He was buried in a tomb.  A tomb looks much like a cave that a bear might sleep in during the winter.  A huge rock, much bigger than this one was rolled in front of the entrance to the cave where Jesus was buried.  Then the tomb was sealed tightly so no one could go in or out of the tomb.

Jesus promised two amazing things before He died.  The first thing Jesus promised was He would be alive again three days after He died.  The second thing Jesus promised was He would live forever.  The people who killed Jesus must have believed that promise.  That is the reason why they went to so much trouble to make sure Jesus could not get out of the tomb.

It is interesting that Jesus’ enemies remembered the promise, but Jesus’ friends and those who loved Jesus so much, forgot about the promise.  When Jesus’ friends heard Jesus was not in the tomb three days after He died, they did not believe what they were hearing.  Jesus promised us that if we - you and I - believe in Him and love Him with all our hearts we, too, will live forever in heaven with Jesus.  Let us pray.

(Have the children repeat the prayer after you.)

PrayerOur Heavenly Father, death is such a hard thing to understand.  We feel sad and lonely when someone we love dies.  But Lord, may we never forget Your promise that we, too, can live with You forever in a beautiful place called heaven.  Amen.

LESSON:  Promises, Promises

Empty Tomb

Materials:

            Patterns

            Construction paper (brown and yellow)

            Scissors

            Glue sticks

            Glue

            Black-eyed peas (dried)

            Green split peas (dried)

Copy a pattern for each child and patterns for cutting and tracing.  Cut out tomb and trace on brown paper.  Cut out opening for door.  Cut out rock.  Glue tomb to yellow construction paper.  Glue brown stone to tomb as shown.  Glue dried peas to stone.

Circle time:  Talk about the rock placed in front of Jesus’ tomb.  It was very big and very heavy - much bigger and heavier than our rock.  Ask, “Who rolled the stone away?”  (An angel - Matthew 28:2.)  “Why was the stone put in front of the tomb?”  (To keep Jesus’ friends from stealing His body and then telling everyone Jesus came back to life! - Matthew 27:64-65.)  Let’s pray.

(Have the children repeat the prayer after you.)

PrayerLord, what a beautiful Easter morning it was when the angel rolled that huge stone away.  You were no longer in the tomb, Jesus, You were alive again just as You promised.  We love You, Jesus.  Amen.
